La Sonate en Si majeur fait partie des premières Sonates pour piano de Schubert. Composée en août 1817, elle ne fut cependant publiée que longtemps après sa mort. La tonalité inusitée à son époque témoigne de la juvénile envie d’expérimentation de Schubert; de la même manière et la même année sont ainsi nées également des sonates en Ré bémol majeur, La bémol majeur et fa dièse mineur. Les surprenantes modulations ainsi que les abrupts changements de caractère entre passages lyriques et explosions dramatiques sont typiquement schubertiens.
Le manuscrit autographe de la partition ayant disparu, cette édition repose sur les esquisses autographes ainsi que sur des copies provenant de l’entourage du compositeur. La préface rédigée par l’experte de Schubert Andrea Lindmayr-Brandl ainsi que toute la partie de remarques et commentaires fournissent des renseignements détaillés sur l’origine de l’œuvre, les sources ainsi que leurs variantes. Un autre point fort réside dans les doigtés du pianiste Martin Helmchen.
