Après la création du morceau non conventionnel mais fortement réussi de "Notturno" pour la Compétition de Piano Internationale de Leeds, Marion Harewood, le co-fondateur de la compétition avec Dame Fanny Waterman, a demandé à Britten d'écrire un morceau supplémentaire pour le concours de 1966. Il a commencé un ensemble de variations en automne de 1965, mais le manuscript cesse juste avant la fin de la sixième variation. Il semble assez probable qu'au final il aurait dû contenir au moins 10 variations. Colin Matthews conclut donc ici la sixième variation. La partition de piano inclut une reproduction de fac-similé de la première page du manuscript original de Britten.
